Speech I delivered at the 2007 Bay Area Walk to D'Feet ALS

Good morning! I have been diagnosed with ALS for over nine years, and as you can see, I am now paralyzed from the neck down, require a computer to speak, and a ventilator to breathe. Despite these limitations, I am enjoying a happy, fulfilling life. The human spirit is truly incredible in its ability to adapt. I have lost the use of my body, but in return, my mind and spirit have been set free. I mention this as a beacon of hope to those who are in earlier stages and fear the future.

As you come together today to give of yourself, making the community a better place for others, understand that by performing this selfless act, you help evolve our civilization to a higher level. At the same time you are improving your own happiness and well being, by cultivating compassion and empathy.

When a large number of people gather for such a pure, heart felt cause, the positive energy that fills the space around us is almost luminous. I would like to recommend an exercise I perform when participating in such events. Take a moment during your walk this morning and be silent. Try to quiet your mind, and let go of all your other thoughts. Now be aware of everything and everyone around you. Feel the intense character and quality of the energy that permeates you and your environment. It would be a shame to participate in such a powerful event, and not be fully present to experience the spiritual forces at work.

Finally, on behalf of myself, and all others directly affected by ALS, I would like to share our sincere gratitude for the love and compassion you are extending to us. We sincerely appreciate it. Thank you!
